4 Mobile App Myths Debunked for Good

There’s no doubt that mobile app development has soared in popularity over the last few years.

The fact that there are now more than 2.2 million apps just on iOS should highlight this point down to a tee.

However, with popularity brings misconceptions.

Nobody can doubt the power of apps for some businesses, but this has also caused much misinformation to be found on the internet (and other places, for that matter).

Some of this completely misrepresents apps; in both a positive and negative light.

All of the above is the reason for today’s post, as we take a look at the four most prominent myths that have emerged from the mobile app industry and just how they can impact the typical business which might be looking towards this avenue as a next step.

Myth #1 – Apps are too expensive to develop

If we turned back the clock a few years ago, this would be entirely true.

Now, not so much.

One only has to look at this tool to create your own apps to see that mobile app development has very much become a do-it-yourself approach.

Just like website builders almost became the norm, the same is happening to apps.

It means that companies no longer have to boast ridiculous budgets to put together their apps; everything can be done on a shoestring budget which naturally opens a lot more doors for businesses.

Myth #2 – The best apps are fun and colourful

This misconception arises from the fact that the stereotypical app was an award-winning game.

While the likes of Angry Birds may have initially grabbed the headlines, it does not mean to say that everything else that’s made is shiny and fun.

On the contrary, some of the most popular apps around are visually as dull as dishwater.

It is more about the functionality and general UX – rather than if it looks funky to the eye.

Myth #3 – Your app will only work when the user is online

This is one of those myths that really couldn’t be any further away from the truth.

Sure, if your app relies on dynamic content that is continually updating, it is really not going to work very well if most of your users are always offline.

However, if there’s much static content, most of it will be readily available offline.

Therefore, this is a question of what you include in your app, rather than immediately dispelling the possibility of not having any offline capabilities.

Myth #4 – Build it, and they will come

if-you-build-it-they-will-come

Let’s conclude with one of the most dangerous myths around.

Many companies put apps together under the “build it, and they will come” philosophy.

In other words, it looks shiny, it looks great, and so everyone should flock to it.

Unfortunately, things do not always work out like this.

You do have to promote your app, and without this legwork everything else is immaterial.
