Nintendo announces closure of Miitomo, its first mobile app

Nintendo will close down its Miitomo app in May. The app was Nintendo’s first adventure into mobile, and was a complimentary service to the avatars used on its game consoles. Miitomo allowed users to create and customize Mii avatars, link them up with friends, and play mini games. It launched in 2016.

In an official announcement, Nintendo says it has stopped the sale of its in-app currency, and the app will stop operating on May 9 2018. At this time, messages will not be visible, items purchased or collected will disappear, and photos taken in the app will no longer be available.

Nintendo is offering users the chance to transfer Mii characters to linked Nintendo accounts, and to save photos in the phone’s own gallery. It’s also giving daily bonuses for logins until the app’s closure date so features remain active until that time.

Miitomo was very different to Nintendo’s later app releases, including Super Mario Run and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, which have captured the attention of many players.
