Vikram Bhatt launches mobile app

While Bollywood filmmakers are spreading their wings wide by exploring the digital space, Vikram Bhatt has taken the unconventional route of creating his own video-on-demand-application. The currently untitled mobile app will launch on January 27, to coincide with his birthday. Two original series, which are already under production, will be the first to stream on it. The first is Untouchables, directed by his daughter, Krishna. The filmmaker will also feature in this outing.

The second project, Nia Sharma-starrer Twisted 2, will be a prequel to the first instalment. Bhatt tells mid-day that a trip to New York’s Times Square served as inspiration to take the plunge into the digital space. “I realised that everything was moving online when a megastore at NYC shut down. I would pick up my music DVDs from there. Now, they’ve opened a fashion store in its place. Even books and retail have taken the digital route. Iconic book shops have shut down,” he says.

Content for the app will be produced by Bhatt’s production house, Lone Rangers, which has previously created web shows like Gehraiyaan, Maya and Twisted. Alluding to his unique subscription module, that gives viewers the option to pay per show instead of subscribing for the entire app, Bhatt says, “It’s actually a multiplex on your phone. When you download the app, you don’t subscribe. Each show has a ticket price of its own. You just pay to see what you want. It’s cheaper than the subscription modules. I think this is a revolutionary idea.”
